Top 10 teams with most wins in Test cricket

Test cricket is the oldest and most traditional format of the game, dating back nearly 150 years. The very first official Test match was played in 1877 between England and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Since then, many more teams have joined the format, and today there are 12 nations that compete in Test cricket.

Among them, England and Australia — the pioneers of Test cricket — have played the most matches over the years.

10. Zimbabwe – 14

Zimbabwe entered the world of Test cricket in 1992, playing their first match against India in Harare. Although they don’t compete regularly in this format, they’ve played a total of 128 Test matches since then. Out of those, Zimbabwe has won 14, lost 84, and drawn 30.

9. Bangladesh – 23

Bangladesh became the 10th Test-playing nation in the year 2000, making their debut in the format against India in Dhaka. Since then, they've grown steadily, often challenging stronger teams and pulling off some memorable victories along the way. As of now, Bangladesh has played a total of 154 Test matches, winning 23, losing 112, and drawing 19.

8. Sri Lanka – 107

Sri Lanka once ranked among the top teams in Test cricket, even holding the record for the highest-ever Test total of 952 runs. Over the years, however, the team has struggled to maintain that level after the retirement of several key players. Despite the challenges, Sri Lanka remains a tough side to beat at home. Out of the 327 Test matches they've played, they've won 107, lost 127, and drawn 93.

7. New Zealand – 121

New Zealand is one of the top teams in world cricket, which they proved by winning the inaugural ICC World Test Championship. The Black Caps have an impressive track record, especially at home, and have also performed strongly in overseas conditions. Over the course of their Test history, they’ve played 480 matches, winning 121, losing 189, and drawing 170.

6. Pakistan – 151

Pakistan gained Test status from the ICC in 1952 and played their first-ever match against India following the partition. Although they lost that debut game, they bounced back strongly to win the next match. Since then, Pakistan have established themselves as one of the top Test-playing nations in Asia.

Over the years, they have played a total of 465 Test matches, winning 151 and losing 148, with 166 ending in a draw.

5. West Indies – 185

The West Indies were the fourth team to play Test cricket, following Australia, England, and South Africa. They became a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1926 and played their first Test match in 1928 against England at Lord’s.

Since then, the West Indies have played 589 Test matches, winning 185, losing 221, drawing 182, and with one match ending in a tie. There was a golden era when the West Indies were virtually unbeatable, dominating world cricket with their talent, flair, and fearsome fast bowlers.

4. India – 185

Team India became the first Asian country to be granted Test status in 1926. They played their inaugural Test match in June 1932 against England at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. Since then, India has grown into one of the top teams in the world, reaching the finals in the first two editions of the World Test Championship (WTC). Over the years, India has played a total of 596 Test matches, winning 185, losing 186, with one match ending in a rare tie and 224 matches drawn.

3. South Africa – 187

South Africa was the third team ever to play Test cricket, gaining Test status in 1909. They played their very first Test match against England at St. George’s Park. Since then, they’ve become a consistent and competitive force in Test cricket. Their crowning achievement came in 2025 when they won the third edition of the ICC World Test Championship.

Despite facing a long 21-year ban from international cricket between 1970 and 1991 due to apartheid, South Africa has still managed to win the third highest number of Test matches in history. So far, they have played 474 Tests, winning 187, losing 161, with 126 matches ending in draws. Their resilience and success make them one of the most respected teams in the sport.

2. England – 403

England is the birthplace of this thrilling sport and holds the proud title of being the oldest nation to play it. They made history by playing the very first Test match in 1877 against Australia.

Since then, England’s journey has been filled with highs and lows. They have competed in a staggering 1,083 Test matches — more than any other team in the world. Out of these, they have won 403, lost 330, and drawn 356 games. Their long-standing presence and rich history truly make England a cornerstone of this game.

When it comes to cricket, Australia stands out as one of the best teams across all formats. Their dominance is clear not only in their performances but also in their impressive statistics, proving their success all around the world.

Australia has played 877 matches in total, winning 422 of them—more than any other team. They’ve faced defeat 234 times, had 2 matches end in ties, and 219 games have been drawn. No other team has better numbers against them, highlighting just how tough and consistent Australia has been over the years.
