Arsenal vs Chelsea: Key Stats & Match Review

Chelsea have continued their strong start in this new Premier League season as they beat the hosts Arsenal by 2-0 on Sunday. In this article, we review the key stats related to yesterday's game between Arsenal and Chelsea.

The Gunners had another disappointing on-field performance, and it will only bring more pressure on the manager Mikel Arteta and his boys.

Though the hosts had some opportunities, the Blues were never under pressure in that London derby. In the 15th minute, Romelu Lukaku opened the scoreline for the visitors. Reece James set a good ball for the Belgian, who was just near the goal-line and didn’t make any mistake in that open opportunity.

In the 35th minute, James doubled the lead with a fantastic finish. While Mason Mount delivered a good ball to James, who had enough space and time on the right side, the English youngster shot powerfully to give no chance to the hosts.

Here are some key stats between Arsenal & Chelsea:

  • Chelsea ended their four-match winless streak (lost thrice and drew the other one) against Arsenal. Before their latest encounter, Blues previously beat Gunners on 29th December 2019 as the away side won by 2-1 in that PL encounter.
  • After the 2010/11 Premier League season, it is the first time when Chelsea haven’t conceded a goal yet in their first two matches of a PL season.
  • It is only the third time in Premier League history when Arsenal suffered defeats in both their first two matches of a season. Before the ongoing 2021/22 season, Arsenal had similar awful luck in 1992/93 and 2018/19 seasons.
  • It is also only the third time in Premier League history when Arsenal failed to score in both their first two matches of a season. The other two such seasons were 2011/12 and 2012/13.
  • Romelu Lukaku scored his fourth goal against Arsenal.
  • Reece James scored his first goal since Chelsea’s Premier League opener in the 2020/21 season (against Brighton on 14th September 2020). After this match, James has now scored two Premier League goals.
  • As a manager, it was Mikel Arteta’s second defeat against Chelsea in six meetings (won three games, and the other one had a draw result). His other defeat against Chelsea was on 29th December 2019, which was also his first managerial meeting against Chelsea.
