Australian Open 2021 Stats: Quarter-finals and Semi-Finals Unique Numbers and Records

From Novak Djokovic ending giant killer Aslan Karatsev’s dream run in the Australian Open 2021 to Naomi Osaka making easy work out of the 23 times Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, the Australian Open 2021 has been boiling down as one of the best ever. 

With the quarters and semis completed, we are now left with the question of the 17-time grand slam winner- Novak Djokovic can end the 20-match streak of Daniil Medvedev.

Rafael Nadal was dealt with a huge setback by the Greek youngster- Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open 2021. 

The 20-time Grandslam winner was well on course for a clinical straight-sets victory but few errors in the tie-break shifted the entire momentum of the Greek resulting in one of the best comebacks in tennis history.

In the extended list of records broken, he added another one by becoming the second-lowest ranked Men’s player to make it to the semis of a Grandslam. Any guesses on the lowest ever?

Well, It is Goran Ivanisevic (ranked 125) at the Wimbledon in 2001, who went on to win the Wimbledon final defeating Patrick Rafter in the finals. He is still the only Men’s Singles player to win the Wimbledon as a wildcard.

The 39-year old Serena Williams reached her 40th grand slam semi-final after managing to defeat the World no.2 Simona Halep in straight sets. But her attempt to level with Margaret Court on the most number of Grand slams by a Woman player was thrashed by the Japanese World no.3 at the semi-finals. Only two Women players have played more semi-finals than Serena at the Grand slams. Any guesses?
