Five biggest deals during the 2019 January transfer window

From a few shock moves to hotly-tipped youngsters joining big clubs, there were plenty of intriguing deals made across Europe. With the January transfer window now closed, we look at five of the most notable deals that were made across Europe.

5. Kevin-Prince Boateng (Sassuolo to Barcelona - loan)

The most shocking move of the January transfer window saw former Ghana international Kevin-Prince Boateng join FC Barcelona on loan from Sassuolo. Having started his career at Hertha Berlin before signing for Spurs in 2007, the six-month loan to Barcelona is an incredible 10th move in 12 years for the former Portsmouth player. His versatility and unpredictability make him a decent value addition at the Nou Camp as Barca look to solidify their place at the top of La Liga and fight for a first Champions League trophy in four years.

4. Alvaro Morata (Chelsea to Atletico Madrid - loan)

Morata endured a difficult spell in the Premier League with Chelsea before making a move back to Madrid, this time joining his old club Atletico Madrid. Having signed for a club-record £70m from Spanish giants Real Madrid less than two years ago, the striker has returned on an 18-month loan to their derby rivals, where Morata started his career as a youngster.

3. Frenkie De Jong (Ajax to Barcelona - £65m)

Rated as one of the best young players in world football, 21-year-old Frenkie de Jong was wanted by Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City. However, it was again the Catalan club FC Barcelona who won the race to secure his signature, with the Ajax midfielder set to join in the summer. The Dutch prodigy joined for a fee of £65m, signing a five-year contract until 2024.

2. Benjamin Pavard (Stuttgart to Bayern Munich - £30.53m)

The Bavarian giants have bolstered their defence with the signing of French World Cup winner Benjamin Pavard from Stuttgart. The 22-year-old rightback will join Bayern Munich in the summer, having signed a five-year deal, with the Bundesliga sides rumoured to have agreed a transfer fee of around £30.53m. Pavard was instrumental in France's World Cup triumph.

1. Gonzalo Higuain (Juventus/AC Milan to Chelsea – loan)

Having lost his place in the Juventus squad due to the arrival of star player Cristiano Ronaldo, the Argentine striker was loaned out to AC Milan, where he was not too successful. But Alvaro Morata being loaned out from Chelsea opened the doors for Gonzalo Higuain to join the Stamford Bridge-based club on a season-long loan and reunite with Maurizio Sarri. He scored a brace in the league clash with Huddersfield Town today.
