Football | What is next in store for the Football World?

The FIFA World Cup 2022 dropped curtains after a mouth-watering 64 matches as Argentina won the holy grail of football for the third time in their history. Regarded by many as one of the best football matches, the South American giants piped France in the final in the penalty shootout to conquer glory. 

So now that the football carnival is over what is next installed for the millions of football fans around the world?

Return of club football

While Argentina were celebrating their success in their homeland, the domestic season in England got underway as the League Cup Round took place before Boxing Day. The club season will be back in focus and it won't be too long before the high-profile teams take center stage. Within eight days of the World Cup final, the Premier League (PL) will make its grand return on Monday (December 26) as Tottenham Hotspur plays against Brentford in the first match after the World Cup break.

All the big boys in the Premier League will be in action as the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool will take the center stage. The PL will have the return of big names like Christian Romero, Lisandro Martinez, Emiliano Martinez, and Julian Alvarez who all won the World Cup with Argentina. The likes of Hugo Lloris and Raphael Varane will also return to the PL action.

When will the other leagues return?

It is interesting to know that a few leagues around the world already kick-started their season while the World Cup was still on. A-League in Australia and the Scottish Premier League (SPL) got underway on December 9 and December 15 respectively while the Saudi Pro League also kickstarted on the latter date.

Big leagues to return as well

Big high-profile leagues like Ligue 1 and La Liga will also return before the curtains are dropped on the calendar year. Ligue 1 will resume on December 28 while La Liga will follow a day later with the return of World Cup-winning stars in their ranks. Serie A will resume in the first week of January along with the Eredivisie while the German Bundesliga will start on January 20.
