Five highest run chases by India in ODI history

India have been one of the most successful chasing teams over the last decade. India boast of three out of the top ten highest totals in a chase, winning all three of them. Let us take a look at India’s five highest ODI chases.

5. 330/4 against Pakistan, Dhaka, 2012

Batting first at Dhaka in an Asia Cup encounter, Pakistan registered a total of 329 thanks to centuries from Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed. India’s chase did not start in the best of fashion as they lost Gautam Gambhir in the second ball of the match. Sachin Tendulkar scored a useful fifty, adding 133 with Virat Kohli. The latter punished the Pak bowlers and smashed a 148-ball 183 (still his highest ODI score) and stitched a brilliant partnership of 172 for the third wicket with Rohit Sharma. India chased the total with more than two overs left.

4. 331/4 against Australia, Sydney, 2016

India chased down 330 against a strong Australian side at the fabled Sydney Cricket Ground after two excellent centuries by David Warner and Mitchell Marsh. The Men in Blue responded fittingly, starting off with a 123-run partnership for the opening wicket. Rohit Sharma fell on 99 to open up the match at 231 for 3 in the 35th over. However, a young Manish Pandey came to the rescue, scoring 104 off just 81 balls, getting India to romp home in style in the 50th over.

3. 351/4 against Australia, Nagpur, 2013

Australia set India a target of 351 thanks to centuries from Shane Watson and George Bailey. In the chase, India looked in control right throughout, especially with Virat Kohli seeing off the chase, ably aided by the opening duo of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma. The Indians chased down 351 in 49.3 overs to register a resounding win. 

2. 356/7 against England, Pune, 2017

The England bowling attack comprised of four seamers and two good spinners, and it looked like their batsmen had helped them out immensely by putting 350 on the board. Soon, India were seen rattling at 63 for the loss of four wickets, when it found a new hero in Kedar Jadhav, who scored the sixth-fastest ODI century by an Indian. The Maharashtrian added 200 runs with Virat Kohli, who scored a ton also, and after the latter got out, he joined Hardik Pandya to finish off the game.

1. 362/1 against Australia, Jaipur, 2013

Chasing 359 against Australia, India started attacking from the word go and at no point did they look even troubled. With a 176-run opening partnership in just 26 overs, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma scored 95 and an 141*. The latter added 186 for the second wicket with Virat Kohli, who incidentally scored a 52-ball 100, the fastest by an Indian. The Men in Blue wrapped up the match in less than 44 overs.
