IPL Media Rights: IPL hits multi-billion dollar deal for the 2023-2027 cycle

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been one of the most popular and richest leagues in the world, and this claim is now underlined by the sale of media rights. 

IPL Media Rights: 2022-2027 Cycle

A staggering Rs 48,390 crores has been spent by Star Network and Viacom to acquire the broadcast and digital streaming rights until 2027. Considering per package and upcoming increase in matches, an IPL match valuation could be as high as Rs 118 crores.

  • An estimated total of 410 matches will take place in the current broadcasting deal running from 2023 to 2027
  • Star Network (Star Sports) will continue to broadcast the IPL for next four years after paying Rs 23,575 crores
  • Voot owned by Viacom 18 will live stream the IPL for next four years after securing the digital rights for Rs 23,758 crores
  • Times Internet and Viacom 18 have secured broadcasting rights for overseas matches
     

Star Network pay record sum for the IPL Media Rights from 2022-2027 to broadcast the league in India (Package A)

Sony was leading the deal for Package A (Broadcast rights in India) on Day 1 of the e-auction but Star Network jumped in and made sure they paid a record sum. 

Alongside Star and Sony, it was Viacom and Amazon Prime who were also in the running for the broadcasting rights. Ultimately after a tough bidding war it was the Star Network who paid Rs 23,575 crores to broadcast IPL for the 2023-27 cycle.

Digital is the future as Viacom pay Rs 23,758 crores for streaming rights (Package B)

Digital is the future as mobile phones and tablets have dominated the world of internet in recent times and in time to come it will only grow. 

Keeping this in view Viacom weren’t sitting back and made sure they paid another record sum to gain the digital rights for a massive amount of Rs 23,758 crores. 

It was Rs 183 crores more than broadcast rights as Indian citizens will be able to watch IPL live during their metro, bus travels or on a long drive on Viacom’s digital app Voot.

Breakdown of the IPL media rights deals 2023-2027 in India (Package A and B combined)-

Estimating total 410 matches in the current IPL Media Rights cycle from 2023 to 2027. Here is a breakdown of the prices paid:

Non-exclusive IPL media rights 2023-2027 (Package C)-

Package C which includes a selection of non-exclusive 18 matches (more in 2026 and 2027 seasons)– a combination of weekend matches, playoffs and final – has been sold for Rs 3,258 crores to Viacom as well.

Overseas IPL media rights 2023-2027 (Package D)-

Package D which is TV rights for broadcasting and streaming outside the subcontinent has gone for Rs 1,057 crores to Viacom and Times Internet (Rs 2.6 crores per match). 

Times Internet will broadcast in MENA countries (the Middle East and North Africa) and the US whereas Viacom will broadcast in Australia, the United Kingdom and South Africa.
