Joe Gomez suffers a potential season-ending injury during England training
Premier League champions Liverpool are in one of their most difficult periods as the injury list piles up. The Reds were dealing with the bad news of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s month-long injury and now they are dealt with another blow at the back with Joe Gomez apparently out for the season.
Unlike all the other injuries, this came in training for the England national team ahead of their friendly against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday. The defending champions are already exasperated by the fact that they may be without the services of Virgil Van Dijk due to a serious knee injury.
The Liverpool right-back is expected to be out for around a month due to a calf concern he picked up against Manchester City on Sunday. The loss of another central defender has left
With the mounting problems at the back, Klopp would be hoping that Fabinho recovers soon, as the Brazilian can take multiple roles. He is currently out with a hamstring injury.
However, the loss of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both is big because since they have started playing together, the Merseyside giants have won 43 out of 56 and lost just four. Klopp and co. have conceded an average of 0.8 goals in each game both with and without Gomez during that time.
With Gomez in the Reds’ XI, they have a favorable win percentage of 76.6% compared to 74.4 when he has not been in the game in any way. The Reds have an impressive 2.5 points per game with the duo featuring, and it drops to 2.4 when at least one of them is missing.
Liverpool will now have to rely a lot more on the young prospects they have like Neco Williams, Rhys Williams, and Nat Phillips, and they can only hope that Fabinho and James Milner provide a cover to them in the time of trouble.
Schalke defender Ozan Kabak has been linked with a move to Anfield in recent months. Kabak has been courting interest from a number of major clubs in Europe in recent times and Liverpool is thought to be leading the queue for his signature in the summer.
David Alaba, Mathias De Ligt, and Dayot Upamecano are the other names doing the rounds for a potential January transfer move to Anfield.
