Match-Preview: Lyon Vs RB Leipzig; Who Will Go Through To The Next Round Of The Champions League?

Lyon will play host to RB Leipzig at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday as Group G heads into match-day six of the UEFA Champions League.

While Lyon will be playing to keep their hopes of playing in the knockout stage alive; for Leipzig, this game will hardly be a question of where they will finish in the group table. They could either finish first or second, having already booked their spot in the knockout stage of the competition.

Les Gones are still very much ahead in the race of progressing to the knockout stage, as all they need is a win to advance to the round of 16. Beating Leipzig won't be a very hefty task for Rudi Garcia's men, given that they already know their style of play, having defeated the Bundesliga side 2-0 in match-day two.

Lyon can also advance with a draw provided that the second-placed Zenit St. Petersburg faces defeat at the hands of Portuguese team SL Benfica. However, a loss in the match-day six fixture would mark the end of the campaign for the French side.  Having already advanced into the round-of-16, the German side will enter the game feeling less heat as the pressure will be low.

However, in pursuit of the top spot in Group G, Nagelsmann’s team will be expected to play out a draw at least. With ten points coming from five games in the group stage, the German look really confident at present.

Last Meeting Between The Two Sides:

In the previous match between the two sides, Lyon beat Leipzig in Germany. It was a 2-0 win, with goals from Memphis Depay and Martin Terrier. The French outfit will be hoping for more of the same, as they look to go through to the next round of the Champions League.

Who Will Win This Tie Now?

From Leipzig’s performance this term, it can be clearly derived that Nagelsmann’s men are aiming at new heights this season as they stand second in the Bundesliga table having already advanced into the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

However, comparatively, things are a bit disappointing for Lyon as they stand 10th in the Ligue 1 and seem a bit too over-dependent on the attacking duo of Memphis Depay and Moussa Dembele as they continue to lack in the defence sector having averaged conceding one goal so far in the domestic league.
