Top 5 candidates who could become the next Everton manager
A bitter-sweet relationship between Rafael Benitez and Everton ended when the Toffees were defeated by Norwich City at Carrow Road. Sportco lists down five candidates who could be in contention to become the next Everton manager.
Everton replaced Rafael Benitez as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor in June after Ancelotti’s shock move to Real Madrid. Since his appointment, the former Liverpool manager has won seven games in 22 matches in England.
The former Liverpool manager's tenure with Everton started brightly, as he won four of their first six league games, ensuring 13 points from possible 18 games.
However, things collapsed, and the Toffees embarked on a losing spree, which saw Everton winning only once in the past 13 Premier League games.
Escalating dissent from the stands as many fans held a “get out of our club,” and few invaded the pitch in an attempt to confront the Spanish manager.
Rafael Benitez’s record in England
Clubs | Games managed | Wins | Win % |
Liverpool (2004-2010) | 350 | 197 | 56.3% |
Chelsea (2012-2013) | 48 | 28 | 58.3% |
Newcastle (2016-2019) | 146 | 62 | 42.5% |
Everton (2021-2022) | 22 | 7 | 31.8% |
Now, we look at top-5 favourites candidates who could be the next Everton Manager
#1 Roberto Martinez
The Belgium manager is familiar with the club, as he previously managed Everton ending his experience in a bad way. However, last time he took charge of the Toffees, he led them to a fifth-place finish in his first season.
Roberto Martinez is currently managing the Belgium national team for the past six years and may leave if the offer arrives. He holds great experience, and Sportco predicts a return to Everton is a possibility.
#2 Frank Lampard
This could be a redemption opportunity for the former Chelsea manager, as he failed to show his managerial acumen at Stamford Bridge.
Frank Lampard has the ability to nurture youngsters into great talents; the likes of Anthony Gordon and new signing Nathan Patterson will need guidance, and Lampard could be the exact manager for them.
Chelsea’s midfielder has already done it in Derby County and as well as at Chelsea, and he can take this opportunity to prove his worth after a tumbling time at Chelsea.
#3 Nuno Espirito Santo
Nuno Santos had a great season at Wolves, having guided them to Premier League in 2018, and built a decent portfolio in the English top flight. Moreover, he was the frontrunner to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Everton, and even the talks were held.
After a patchy start to the season with new club Tottenham, he was sacked in November 2021. Although now the former Wolves manager is not managing any club and could be the next manager of Everton.
#4 Paulo Fonseca
The former Shakhtar Donetsk’s manager has previously been heavily linked with Everton and boasts an impressive experience in Europe’s top flight. Fonesca was also linked with Tottenham and Newcastle in the past.
He could be a suitable choice for Moshiri. He has won three league titles with Shakhtar Donetsk and also managed Roma. And has shown his desire to work in England.
#5 Wayne Rooney
It is very unlikely that Wayne Rooney could be the next Everton manager, but many fans would love the decision if Moshiri lands him at Goodison Park.
Rooney has been in the limelight in Championship recently; as a miracle, he has done with Derby County, which could raise his stock.
The former Everton player has managed to take his club out of the relegation zone despite the 21-point deduction and other financial penalties given to the club.
The 36-year-old is worthy of this position, but it would be too soon if seen from his experience, and Everton sits at 16th place. So, it would be a very stressful job for the English man to save the club from relegation.
