Four-time US Open champion Rafael Nadal will be eyeing a historic 23rd Grand Slam title as he is all set to participate in the final Grand Slam of the year.
Having started 2022 with a Grand Slam win at the Australian Open, the 22-time Grand Slam champion would like to close the year with a bang as well by conquering the US Open.
A win in New York will see Nadal go level with the likes of Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, and Jimmy Connors, who all have won five titles.

Rafael Nadal at US Open
Having first appeared at the US Open in 2003, it took an incredible seven years for the ‘King of Clay’ to conquer the hard court of New York in 2010.
Despite being a consistent performer and Grand Slam champion at the French Open and Wimbledon on multiple occasions the Spaniard had to wait a long time before he lifted the holy grail of Arthur Ash stadium.
So far the 36-year-old has played in 15 seasons of the US Open comprises of 77 matches and has won four titles. His last appearance at the US Open in 2019 resulted in a title triumph while he has missed the US Open on each of the last three occasions. On eight occasions he has made it to the semifinal while he has also appeared in nine quarterfinals.

Rafael Nadal: Record in the US Open finals
At 36, Rafael Nadal has played in five US Open finals, winning four and losing one. Three of those finals were against arch-rival, Novak Djokovic, who won’t be participating in the event this time.
The pair first met in 2010 US Open final where Rafael Nadal ran out victorious to complete his career Grand Slam 2010 while the tables were turned in 2011 final as Nadal lost to Djokovic.
However, in 2013 final, it was again the 22-time Grand Slam champion who emerged victorious in four sets.
Nadal’s other two wins in the tournament came in 2017 and 2019 when he defeated South Africa’s Kevin Anderson and current top seed Daniil Medvedev in the final respectively.
The 2019 event was also his appearance at the year-end Slam and has since been on the treatment table for one or the other reason.

Rafael Nadal eyes second career treble
Not since 2010, has the four-time champion won three Grand Slam titles in a single year. Back in 2010, he won the French Open followed by his second Wimbledon title, and then finally won the US Open to complete a Career-Slam.
2022 will also represent a similar stance for him as eyes another treble. Had he won the Wimbledon Championships, he would have stood for an annual Grand Slam, like Novak Djokovic in 2021.
Seeded second for the tournament, the former World No.1 will be determined to make the most of the occasion and secure his fifth US Open title. If he does succeed it will also be his third Grand Slam of the year.
Also if Rafael Nadal secures the US Open, he will equal Serena Williams' tally of 23 singles Grand Slam titles, one behind the all-time record of Margret Court.
