Marin Cilic beats Andrey Rublev at French Open 2022
As two of the most fearsome forehands on Tour clashed at the beginning of June on the Roland Garros clay, an extraordinary sequence of clean hitting from Marin Cilic in the deciding-set tie-break clinched a thrilling quarter-final against Andrey Rublev.
Cilic came into the match in a confident mood — he had described his fourth-round triumph in Paris against World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev as “one of the best matches of my career from start to finish” — and the Croatian’s confidence was clearly demonstrated in the way he took the deciding tie-break out of Rublev’s hands at the tail-end of an almighty tussle with a sequence of searing winners.
Rafael Nadal gets the better of Daniil Medvedev in Australian Open final
The incredible comeback completed by Rafael Nadal against Medvedev in the final of the first Grand Slam of the year went down the memory lanes. Down by two sets, 2-3 and 0-40, the Majorcan found a way to amaze the world of sport once again.
After canceling the three consecutive break points offered to the Russian, Nadal began to put Medvedev in difficulty also in response and gave him a double 6-4. Finally, in the decisive set, the Spaniard pinned Medvedev to 7-5 and lifted his 21st career Grand Slam to the sky.
Barbora Krejcikova beats Iga Swiatek in Ostrava final
After the US Open, I tend to switch off from tennis. One match that did catch my Autumn gaze was the final of OSTRAVA!!! This final had a superb atmosphere as Krejcikova beat Swiatek 5-7 7-6(4) 6-3. It was genuinely hard to work out who the crowd were rooting for with many Polish fans making the short trip to Ostrava. Three hours and 18 minutes. 86 winners between the pair. Krejcikova needed six match points in a thrilling final game where Swiatek conjured up some absolute wizardry to stay in contention.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner serve thriller
Two of the biggest young talents in the game battling it out until the early hours in New York City, September’s US Open quarter-final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner was one for the history books. In the marathon contest, Alcaraz beat Sinner 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-7(0), 7-5, 6-3 and took one more step towards glory.
It was a demonstration of power, athleticism, skill and sheer mental resilience from two players who look set to be at the top of the game for years to come. In what may well be the first of many classic Grand Slam battles between the two, Alcaraz ultimately prevailed, having saved match point at 4-5 in the fourth set en route to a remarkable five-hour, 15-minute win.
Karolina Pliskova beats Victoria Azarenka at US Open
In an era of few defining rivalries, Azarenka-Pliskova has low-key been one of the best match-ups on the WTA tour. This was their first meeting in over three years; prior to this last 16 clash in New York, the pair had played each other eight times with the head-to-head split evenly at 4-4. Five of those matches went the distance. This was just a great match where Plisikova prevailed in three sets by a score of 7-5 6-7(5) 6-2. Fast-paced rallies, both going for it and not holding back the match were a treat for the fans at the US Open as they collided in the year-end slam. It was raining down winners with 99 combined from the pair.
