The VAR controversy continues - Eibar vs Real Madrid

Rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are on contradicting end of views again as Barcelona and ex-Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman claims that only the rarest people would agree with the decision of not awarding a penalty to Eibar against Real Madrid in the latter’s win. 

The Catalan boss was pretty vocal about his disappointment over the refereeing in the match between Eibar and Real Madrid and he could not believe how Madrid got away with a crucial spot-kick not being given. 

Zinedine Zidane and co. clinched a 3-1 yet a nervy victory over Eibar after Lucas Vazquez’s stoppage-time strike won Real all the three points at Municipal de Ipurua. Karim Benzema and Luka Modric were clinical enough to provide the Los Blancos with a 2-0 lead inside 13 minutes before Eibar pulled one back in their favor.  

Eibar managed to gain momentum towards the final quarter of the game and were pushing hard for an equalizer when the hosts felt that there should have been a handball penalty awarded to them. It seemed like the ball struck Sergio Ramos’ arm inside the penalty area, with Jose Luis Mendilibar, the Eibar boss absolutely fuming because the decision was not in his team’s favor. 

Real Madrid have now managed to win five games on the run in all competitions and are level on points with the Rojiblancos, Atletico Madrid. 

However, Koeman claims that Real were too fortunate. He said, “The day of the Madrid match, I said something that doesn’t need to be repeated. I think there are things that cannot be understood I’m sure that if you ask 10 people if yesterday’s game is a penalty, nine will say yes. The referee and his team have decided not to call it. But well, we know.” 

A lot of reports also suggest that this reaction is due to Barcelona’s frustrating draw against Valencia at Camp Nou, and their position eight points adrift of both the Madrid outfits. What do you think? Was it a penalty? Or Barcelona are back to it again?
