Former Schalke captain Alexander Nubel to join Bayern Munich in 2020

Alexander Nubel was finalized as a possible long-term successor to Manuel Neuer. He'll be moving to Bayern Munich at the end of the season on a free transfer.

The 23-year-old signed a five-year deal with Bayern, which commences on July 1 and he also informed Schalke a month before that he would not be renewing his contract amid links to various clubs including Tottenham.

Wagner confirmed Nubel’s suspension when Bundesliga resumes because of a red card he received for a risky challenge on Eintracht Frankfurt’s Mijat Gacinovic in December. 

Nubel will no longer be Schalke captain. Omar Mascarell will now wear the armband for Die Knappen. Schalke manager David Wagner has urged the fans to still support the German keeper till the end of the season.

Wagner said,” We have mutually agreed that Alex will step down from his role as captain. We looked at all the pros and cons and decided that it’s better for the team if he gives up the armband. This way we avoid constant unrest. Alex remains an important member of the group. We need to continue to completely support every player.”

Wagner also confirmed that the club will not be signing any new goalkeeper to replace Nubel with Ralf Fahrmann, who is currently on loan at Norwich City and Germany under-21 international Markus Schubert considered as suitable options for next season.

Nubel was appointed as Schalke captain in August, replacing Fahrmann, after making 18 appearances in Bundesliga in the 2018-19 season. “We tried everything to convince Alex to stay. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out.” Jochen Schneider, Schalke’s Head of Sport added. 

Wagner also cleared the part that a player is not bigger than the club and the club has bigger things to think and discuss. Things are more complicated as they seem.
